Portugal

this is actually the view from our hotel, Don Carlos, in Caceres, Spain...
I liked the photo too much to delete it...

Sardinhas at Maria´s...Restaurante De Carmo, Quelfes

8th of January, and we've left Portugal for Sevilla, Españha.
What a fantastic time we had.  Evora was a highlight.  That beautiful hotel, the little narrow streets...
The drive down through the Alentejo region was very picturesque...olive trees, cork trees, grapes...interspersed with lovely old buildings and buildings that might have been lovelier a hundred years ago...
Mertola, the pretty little riverside town where we stopped for um cafe con leite and a meandering walk throuh a real castle in ruins that would have had OSH scrambling for cover...
Tavira, the Venice of the Algarve (without gondolas, canals or smells) and onto Casa Alegria, in the what-someone-intended-might-be-a-resort with its fabulous big haciendas and pot-holed streets...
Moncarapacho, the nearby village, and Antonio´s, the little internet cafe by day/great restaurante at night...the señors starting the day with a coffee or a cerveza, the potshop...
Olhao, the bigger town with the wonderful fish market (next post) and McDonald´s...

 Feijoiada at Barra Nova, Olhao
       ...the Pousada at Estoi

        bacalhau...luckily it´s not smell-cam...

       Portimao

After our night in Sevilla we carried on travelling the autovia to Portimao and realised we were definitely staying in the nicest part of the Algarve...ugly ugly high-rise apartment blocks and hotel bellavistas as far as you could see ugggh

But overall, Portugal was great (not that the writer is biased!)  I loved its honesty, the people, the tile-covered buildings, the doors...and even the food!  Feijoiada, Cataplana, Arroz de Tamboril and even Bacalhau.  Rustic, fresh, delicious.

Adeus Portugal...it was nice to re-visit you and re-discover your charms.
Saudades x
