LONDON
With all the news on the tv saying the Eurostar queues were a mile long & please don't travel unless absolutely necessary, the intrepid Kiwis went to London with their little backpacks (an inspiration) and hearts full of hope...
We were booked into a wee hotel near Kings Cross St Pancras (the international station) and arrived there early afternoon to see that the bit about the queues was certainly correct. Later that day they solved the problem by closing the station and our dream trip to Paris was looking rather precarious...
What else was there to do but head into London town for a spot of sight-seeing! We divided into two, with the big boys, Brent & Ben going to the British and Natural History Museums, and Jed and I through Covent Garden and off to the National Gallery on the promise of a return visit to Hamleys if he was a good boy and looked at some art with his mum...
and Brent joined the queue outside the station at about 6am for an 8.55 train.
To quote a Briitish woman I spoke to in the loos, the Dunkirk spirit prevailed...coupled with some Kiwi ingenuity (thank you Jed for getting us priorty on account of your being nearly 5...) a large dash of luck!... and we made it on the train, which eventually left London about two hours later than scheduled...
whew!!!
